Willow Beach trout deal finalized

By The Kingman Daily Miner,

There is finally an agreement that will ensure that trout will again be raised and stocked in the Colorado River.

The agreement, which was signed by the Arizona Game and Fish Department and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, will mean that once again anglers in Mohave County will be assured of a steady supply of rainbow trout.

Mohave County Supervisor Hildy Angius played an important part in seeing that this agreement, was made. And rightfully so.

Fishing is very important to citizens and businesses in Mohave County and Clark County.

“This agreement is vitally important to the angling community in Arizona, which supports approximately 1,700 jobs and generates more than $75 million in economic activity along the Mohave County/Clark County stretch of the lower Colorado River,” said U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.

The agreement callsfor the Game and Fish to cost-share the pipeline repair of the Willow Beach Fish Hatchery.

The Fish and Wildlife will repair the pipeline and produce rainbow trout for stocking in the Colorado River for five years, and supply 2 million rainbow trout eggs to Game and Fish annually for five years.

The agency will supply 160,000 Apache Trout eggs to Game and Fish for 10 years, and will coordinate annually with them on these efforts.

U.S. Rep. Paul Gosar, R-Ariz., also played an important part is this effort, along with McCain.

Gosar said, “The agreement to restore rainbow trout stocking at Willow Beach is a win for jobs, Arizona’s economy and sportsmen throughout the country.”

Chris Cantrell, fisheries chief for Game and Fish, said, “This partnership will ensure continuation of trout stockings going forward in the Colorado River. This is a great day for Arizona anglers.”
