Cutting Spending and Oversight
During his relatively short tenure in Congress, Dr. Gosar has passed 79 amendments through the House. The majority of these amendments were focused on eliminating waste, fraud and abuse within a bloated federal government. In the last three years alone, Dr. Gosar’s amendments that have passed the House have cut or prevented more than $1.6 billion in wasteful government spending. Some of these successful efforts include cutting the IRS budget by $345.6 million, blocking $500 million from being spent on a wasteful new bus program, blocking $440 million from going to terrorist organizations like ISIS and Hamas, blocking $29 million for a duplicative climate change model program and blocking bonuses for IRS bureaucrats.
In 2011, Dr. Gosar’s class took control of the House and instituted the first earmark ban in the history of this nation. Paul has consistently voted against increasing and suspending the debt ceiling, voting six times against further increasing this cap. Dr. Gosar has introduced legislation that seeks to advance a powerful Balanced Budget Amendment through an agreement among the states called an “interstate compact” that includes the necessary safeguards.
In October of 2015, Paul led a bipartisan letter signed by 30 members of the House demanding that corrective action be taken against Secret Service employees that broke the law and leaked private information about House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz. In November 2015, the Secret Service announced that 42 Secret Service employees would receive suspensions or be fired for their role in this incident.
Dr. Gosar has been leading the charge to prevent Members of Congress from flying first-class at taxpayer expense. In March of 2015, he introduced the Coach-Only Airfare for Capitol Hill Act, H.R. 2210. Paul believes that if members of our military can’t fly first-class at taxpayer expense then members of Congress shouldn’t either.
Paul has been leading the charge to block Obama’s takeover of the local zoning process through an unconstitutional regulation that attempts to reengineer the makeup of our neighborhoods. Essentially, the Obama Administration is forcing local communities to adhere to the administration’s utopian housing mandates or risk loosing out on millions of dollars in grant money. Rep. Gosar has introduced the Local Zoning and Property Rights Protection Act and passed two amendments through the House to block this overreach.
Dr. Gosar spearheaded the effort to prevent the Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) from enacting new boating restrictions on Lake Havasu and closing more areas to tubing, wake-boarding and water skiing activities. He also passed an amendment through the House instructing the Service to reopen the area the agency shutdown in May 2015 through an unlawful press release two days before Memorial Day weekend. According to a July 2016 economic impact study, boaters on Lake Havasu support more than 2,000 jobs, spend more than $150 million annually and generate more than $63 million for the city's economy.
Dr. Gosar sponsored an amendment and has introduced legislation to prevent the Obama Administration from operating a backdoor amnesty program that allows illegal aliens to enlist in the military. As Breitbart News reports, the administration “is accelerating its program to recruit younger illegals and put them on a fast-track to citizenship.” Prior to a memo from the Obama Administration in 2014, DACA aliens and other unlawful illegal immigrants were not allowed to enlist in the military.
Dr. Gosar spearheaded the effort to stop the Bureau of Land Management from closing its Arizona field office and taking those jobs to New Mexico.
Paul has been leading the fight to block presidential abuse of the Antiquities Act and to prevent a new 1.7 million acre national monument in a watershed in Northern Arizona. President Obama has misused a 1906 law to unilaterally lockup 265 million acres within 23 national monuments. Extremist environmental groups like the Sierra Club and Center for Biological Diversity are now pushing him to circumvent Congress and create a massive new monument in Northern Arizona so they can prevent forest thinning, grazing, ohv use and energy development on nearly two million acres. Dr. Gosar has passed two amendments through the House, submitted an appropriation’s rider and introduced the Protecting Local Communities from Executive Overreach Act in order to block this misguided land grab.
Dr. Gosar and 18 other members of the House also introduced legislation to initiate articles of impeachment against John Koskinen, Commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The House has held hearings on this matter and this effort is moving forward. Koskinen should have held people accountable and cleaned house after this rogue agency targeted conservative organizations for their beliefs. Instead he lied under oath before Congress, allowed for the destruction of nearly 24,000 emails from Lois Lerner and has been a key conspirator in attempting to cover Ms. Lerner’s tracks.
Dr. Gosar has been leading the charge to hold the EPA accountable for their continued overreach and has introduced legislation to initiate impeachment proceedings against EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy. On multiple occasions EPA Administrator McCarthy lied to members of Congress and committed perjury. Under her failed leadership, the agency continues to break the law in order to expand agency control and force job-killing regulations down our throats.
Dr. Gosar has also been leading the charge to prevent EPA’s new Ozone regulation, projected to be the most expensive rule in the history of this country. The EPA didn’t even allow counties to implement the previous standards before unilaterally lowering standards to levels that would immediately put nearly 2,000 counties throughout the country in non-attainment status. Arizona is one of the hardest hit states and even areas in the Grand Canyon would be in non-attainment as a result of this misguided regulation. Dr. Gosar’ bill to block this overreach has more than 80 cosponsors.
Paul has spearheaded the effort to defeat the EPA’s unconstitutional Waters of the United States (WOTUS) rule, a proposed regulation that attempts to expand agency control over millions of acres of water and land. Dr. Gosar held a hearing, introduced a bill, defeated a democrat amendment and successfully inserted appropriations riders utilizing the power of the purse to block WOTUS. Rep. Gosar’s bill to stop WOTUS has more than 180 cosponsors.
